Teaching Principles

To ensure that standards of education are upheld, that curricula and standardized
programs are available, National and Provincial Standards of Practice are provided
for the Teaching Profession that encompass :

Encourage students to grow as individuals & as contributing members to their chosen
[sport].

Know the curriculum, the subject matter, the student, the teaching practice, education-related
legislation, methods for communication & ways to teach in a changing world.

Teaching practices
Apply professional knowledge and understanding of the curriculum, teaching, student
& changing context of the learning environment. Conduct ongoing assessment and
evaluation of progress. Modify & refine teaching practices through continuous
reflection.

Leadership and Community
Create and sustain learning communities in the facilities and in the profession.
Collaborate with colleagues & other professionals, parents & members of the community
to enhance programs & student learning.
- Ongoing Professional learning (continuing education)
Engage in a continuum of professional growth to improve their practice. Recognize
that teachers are learners who are interdependent on teacher / student learning.

Principles
Professional growth is at the core of teacher professionalism. The needs for continuing
education are identified and opportunities made available through accredited programs
for ongoing professional learning.
- Establish National Standards of practice
- Identify Knowledge, skills & values inherent to the teacher's
profession.
- Articulate goals & aspirations
- Foster student learning.
- Provide progressive, logical Programs that equip teachers to
meet the challenge.
- Ensure effective teaching practices that accommodate change
& meet current needs
- Provide a foundation for ongoing professional growth
- Co-operate to create educational systems where the teaching
professional is able to work toward goals and aspirations outlined in the standards
of practice for the teaching profession, serving a range of purposes :
- Focus on the responsibility of the teaching profession to enhance student
learning
- Provide a common understanding of what makes "being a
teacher/trainer" a unique professional experience
- Clarify the knowledge, skills and values implicit in the practice of
teaching
- Provide the basis for ongoing personal and professional growth and
the accreditation of professional learning programs
- Represent the aspiration and goals of the teaching profession
